📘 Book Release The Price of Gold: Mining, Pollution, and Resistance in Yellowknife

Arn Keeling, a member of the MinErAL network and professor of geography at Memorial University, has co-authored The Price of Gold: Mining, Pollution, and Resistance in Yellowknife with John Sandlos.

For fifty years, gold mining in Yellowknife (NWT) supported northern settlement and generated significant profits, while leaving a major environmental footprint. Beginning in the 1940s, the Giant Mine released thousands of kilograms of arsenic trioxide into the air and waterways, causing illness and death—particularly among the nearby Yellowknives Dene community. Despite the later addition of control systems, contamination continued, and 237,000 tonnes of highly toxic arsenic dust were buried underground. For decades, mining companies and the federal government downplayed the extent of the damage and delayed action.

The Price of Gold traces the troubling history of one of Canada’s most contaminated sites, as well as the inspiring resistance led by Indigenous leaders, unions, and environmental groups to protect air, water, and community health.
