Koniambo Nickel Mine: Impacts and Opportunities, for the Kanak communities and Post-Mining Strategies

Members and partners of the MinErAL network visited several Kanak communities in New Caledonia's Northern Province from August 15 to 20, 2023. 

The purpose of the trip was to explore the region's nickel mining development, particularly the Koniambo Nickel project near Voh. The team comprised Thierry Rodon, Sabrina Bourgeois from Université Laval, and Jean-Marc Séguin from Makivvik.

Seminar on the implementation of impact benefit agreements: Summary of discussions

From September 10 to 15, 2020, the MinErAL network held a joint seminar on the implementation of impact benefit agreements (IBAs) with Indigenous partners and representatives at Mushuau-nipi, the ancestral site located north of Schefferville. The five-day seminar looked at issues related to IBA implementation. This summary highlights the problems, questions, and potential solutions discussed during the proceedings.

True North Treasure Initiative Evaluation Report

In May 2018, Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Canada provided funding to Thierry Rodon and Steeve Jacob to conduct an evaluation of the Northern Treasures Initiatives Program. This program supports Aboriginal participation in key sectors of the Canadian economy, such as agriculture, fisheries, forestry, mining and energy. In Quebec, a specific initiative has been developed to encourage Aboriginal participation in northern development, particularly in major mining projects related to the Labrador Trough.
